Transmission acting funny
Hi,
Newbie here.
I just recently bought a 2004 Mazda 6 2.3L 4 cyl 203K and today while coming back from work and while parked at a stop light the gear shifted very weird, it felt like it actually shifted between 1 and 2 within a second and then the car
did not shift past 3rd. Using the trip-tronic system when ever i shifted into 4th the rpm would go very high and i would have to down shift to 3rd and got home that way. So i Stopped the car, turned the engine off and tried again and same symptoms, the car does not want to shift out of 3rd and then afterward it would go to high rpm then shift into 2nd gear and 3rd, 4th does not even engage.
Does this car have 4 or 5 gears?.
Also there are no DTC codes, no check engine light nothing, i also used my code reader and it said there were no codes but then why is the transmission
acting up,
could it be a speed sensor or something? please someone let me know.
thanks

Indeed high mileage and no idea how well or bad it was maintained leaves you guessing.
But you can do the following:
check the fluid level. Use the proper procedure to do this. Warm engine and tranny, level place to park, idle in P and check the level with the dipstick, twice to be sure.
How does the fluid look like? How does it smell? How old is it?
Trannys (proper name is "automatic transaxle") have a pump, a valve body, and electrical solenoids to do the shifting. There are also sensors.
It is worth while to check the sensors and all electrical parts first.
Replacing the fluid might help. But in a high mileage tranny that has not received proper care it could cause death as well. Since your tranny is barely alive it does not matter. So I would change the fluid by dropping the pan, change the filter (if this tranny has one) and put new fluid of the right kind in it. This would be followed by a lot of hard finger crossing.
There is also "Lucas Oil Transmission Fix". It could buy you some time.
Good luck!
