Did a previous owner remove my 2000 Protege EGR?

I notcie some cars at the salvage yard have a pipe running from the exhaust manifold to the intake manifold. Mine doesn't.

However I am thinking if my EGR was really gone, wouldn't my OBD II code checker show it? I pull no such code.

I have a 96 Corolla with an EGR and one without an EGR. Did the 1999-2005 Protege ever have a non EGR version?

Did the different cars have the same engine code?
Do the parts stores have an EGR valve for your engine in the catalog?
