Default 1998 Protege Engine number

Hi, I am looking ( without success) for the engine number for my car. I want to change the water pump and figured I would do the timing belt at the same time. There are two options for timing belts for my engine (1.5L) and as such I need the engine number to be able to order the correct belt. Does anyone out there know where the engine number for this engine is located?

Thanks, Joe

Joe: take your VIN along when you go to the store. The 8th or 10th digit is the code for the engine.

Thanks for your reply. I think the vin will tell the dealer what engine the car has not the serial number of the engine. This engine has two belt possibilities engines with numbers Before # 194743 or After # 194742. Thanks for the effort though.

O.K.
The Haynes Manual says:
" the engine ID nr can be found stamped on a pad on the block. On 1.6L engines it is on the right rear of the block and on 1.8L engines at the front of the engine, below the coolant hose."
It did not say anything about 1.5L engines.

There was nothing on the engine, or any of the door tags about the engine. It was a mid year change in engine so there`s the reason for a different belt. A trip to the dealer with the VIN had me a stock part number and I can get a cross reference on a aftermarket belt that way. Thanks for the help I appreciate it!
