Your biography is similar to mine. I'm too old to be rolling around on a garage floor so I put myself in self half-retirement from working on automobiles. I'll sign up to change fluids and hire out for the rest. It's good timing actually as this CX-5 is way more complicated than my 19 year old Jeep and 33 year old Dodge pickup.

I'm curious when CX-5 owners change Transmission fluid/filter, Transfer Case, and Rear Differential fluid.
i was going to do 30K but my 2022 diff needed to be replaced at 25k miles!

Hypoid is just the technical term for ring and pinion gear set, ie, a differential.

For the record...this is what my local Mazda dealer charged for the following Mazda OEM products:

Transmission Fluid (ATF-FZ): $15.76/quart
SG1 Hypoid Gear Oil: $31.74/quart
Transmission Oil Filter/Strainer (#FZ01-21-500): $51.54

I opted to go with OEM because I trust it but, even more, my car is still under factory warranty. I don't want to give them any excuses for not honoring any possible warranty work.

Your assumption about warranty is error.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magnus...s_Warranty_Act

Read this..^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Also I never use any Mazda fluid when I do warranty service work that Mazda corp signs off on.
I am an approved independent warranty service Automotive Service Technician. This mean occasionally I get assigned to do warranty service from one of three Mazda dealerships in my area.

OK, let's see.

Scenario 1: Use a non OEM fluid. Have the dealer void my warranty. Hire a lawyer for whatever $$. Sue dealer under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. Hope 8 months later when the case is heard the judge sees it my way and makes me whole again.

Scenario 2: Use the OEM fluids. Pay $15 - 20 more. Avoid any and all conflict.

Hmmm, let me see. <insert Jeopardy theme song>

I think I'll take Scenario 2.

If you look there has never on any platform since the Moss warranty act that has been denied a warranty claim based on not using OEM oil.

I am willing to bet ..that your Mazda service shop also stock and uses bulk oil that is not even MAZDA but meets the basic oil requirements. Ask them ?
There is even many MAZDA dealerships that solely use synthetic blend oil in bulk which is also perfectly fine if again it meets the basic requirements.

I have been to several Warranty cases over the years on both sides for the consumer and for the auto manufacturer your scenery is not realistic for the consumer because there are safe guards . Not saying that someone with a serious burr up their **** and often was the cause of an issue didn’t do the full on attempt to sue an automaker. Generally lots of time and money is spent on both parties and a settlement ends with a NDA. So many cases we never read about. Been there on a few of those as well .
Here is a bit on information about what you can and should not do . Stay with products that meet or exceed the OEM and only abide by the exact wording regarding parts and fluids the word REQUIRED. If it does not state the word REQUIRED then you are not obligated to use anything that is at least as good , meets the requirements set by the Manufacturer. In fact this also goes with recommendations on basic service schedules. The most common is oil and filter service . Go look exactly how the wording is and how they imply the miles for servicing should be . Makes you feel like if you 1 mile over some you may loose your warranty. That never happens….there is legal clause again in Moss that states reasonable time .

So in a nut shell and based on my exact requirements Mazda had me sign to do warranty service your scenario would never see a suit or warranty claim denied . In other words again you would never be denied a warranty based on using non MAZDA fluids NEVER.

Mazda corp USA contact them will confirm what I just posted.
.
