CX-5 Under Warranty Making Low Droning Noise: Mazda Dealer Needs to Fly In Mechanic
I recently bought a 2020 CX-5 used with about 68,000 miles (CPO Warranty and Powertrain Warranty). It had a low-droning sound that got worse with speed. I initially thought it was the new tires so I drove it for 500-1000 miles. Sound still there if not worse. Brought it to the dealer. Dealer thought it was an axle bearing but when they checked nothing was wrong but they acknowledge the sound. They gave me a new loaner car and told me they had to dig deeper. It has been about 5 days. Just got a call saying they need to fly in a Mazda USA regional mechanic to help them figure out what it is.
Does anyone know if this is industry Jargon for anything? Why would they have to fly in a mechanic? Are they doing a cost evaluation? Just super curious why they are using that type of resource.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Looks like you are in luck with having the CPA warrantee . No worries ,It is going to be the dealer and Mazda's problem . In the mean time your driving and putting free miles on a new loaner car until they figure it out. Their techs may be stumped, but I'm sure it will be resolved what ever it is.
Thank you for the response! I just wanted to make sure it didn't mean my car was dead or something. The service rep seemed EXTREMELY nervous when they were explaining the whole situation to my wife and I.
Welcome to the forum!
Not all dealerships have factory trained and Certified Mazda Automotive Technicians.
It is not uncommon to have one go to a specific dealer to resolve a problem. It is unusual that you were told ! LOL
I have personally been *called a few times over the years to go to a couple of dealerships.
It may also be because that dealership does not have a very *specialized diagnostic equipment that utilizing sound sensors to detect concerned areas of the chassis and running gear?
Whatever the case I would just say be patient because it sounds like the dealership is taking care of you!

Ok cool! Thank you for easing our nerves a little. They basically said it could be a little while so I am guessing they want to be super thorough... that or something is super wrong... but that's on them anyway!
Any update?
Mazda reached out to regional corporate back and forth. They determined some squeek sounds and erratic shifting were the fault of a bad transmission. They took 2 months and replaced my transmission. My original issue is still present, a low droning sound at speed, and I am going to take it in again for them to look at it. So far they replaced my transmission and a bad wheel bearing. It has been both a wonderful and awful experience so far; They are definitely taking care of me but it sucks that a certified used car wasn't looked at very well at all. I am still trying to figure out the cause of the low droning sound on my own.

Hi there,
I also have the "droning" noise! 2021 Cx-5, 100k mileage on it. Started hearing this droning noise while driving at normal speed, stops when vehicle comes to stop. At first, I also thought it was the new tires we put on. I also thought maybe it was the exhaust system - but it seems this is not the case. I can rev vehicle and sound doesn't mimic the RPMs but instead seems to mimic the motion/speed of vehicle itself. Did you ever get to the bottom of your problem? Vehicle going into service this week! thanks!
