Default '00 323 loses power randomly.

Hi folks, long time reader, first time poster.
I have been given a 2000 model 323 (called Familia in new Zealand) to fix.
It has one of those infuriating issues, that could be one or more, or a combo of issues. The car will be running perfectly fine, then it will lose all power, but remain running most of the time. Trying to rev it, just gets you a really boggy, popping sound, and the only way to get it back to running properly, is to switch it off, and come back to it an hour later. It is often accompanied with a strong petrol smell.

What I have checked:
Spark plugs - resistance values were miles out, so I replaced them all. Drives a bit better, but didnt fix the issue.
Mass air flow sensor - used Multi meter to check for consistent voltage outputs at specific revs, that match with original spec voltages.

What I haven't checked:
Fuel pump - simply because it runs fine most of the time.
Injectors - apparently the symptoms Im getting can be attributed to this.
Sensors - I'm a backyard mechanic, so i have no workshop manuals, so Im not even sure if it has any sensors. Maybe a camshaft position sensor?.

I would be very grateful for any input.\
Best regards - kruz.

More than likely a dodgy ignition coil.

Thanks very much Grim. I'll investigate this. I think it has individual coil packs for each cylinder doesnt it?
