I've posted in the Protege subforum but also wanted to post my question here because it is somewhat of a general problem.

I am having trouble finding an air filter that will fit my 2000 Mazda Protege ES (1.8L). I've tried all of the major aftermarket brands to no avail. Finally, I purchased the OEM air filter from the dealer. Still, it WILL NOT fit.

Is it possible that the air box is not original? I can't see how after buying several air filters that not a single one will fit. I can't imagine that this can be user error, either. Replacing an air filter is about as straight forward as it gets.

Any feedback, advice, comments, etc. are appreciated.
