Tribute Won't Start
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone can assist my on my 2002 Mazda Tribute Automatic.
I have two problem that maybe related to each other.
1. The car wont' start - but all the lights are on but when I try to turn it - I don't hear anything / no click what so ever. When I by pass the ignition connecting two wires at the starter - the car starts.
2. I can not swift the gear it does not come out park - unless I press the release key behind the steeringwheel.
It seems like the car does not know what gear its on - gear shift sensor? Location?
Anyhelp would be very much appreciated.

I think you are looking for the transmission range sensor.
It would tell the PCM if you are in gear or not.
I think you are having the right idea. The PCM does not realize you are in P or N. Therefore it does not let you start the engine.
It's on the side of the transmission:
