Default replaced engine

I am considering buying a used Mazda 6 wagon that has had the engine replaced. The acr is generally in very nice condition, but I am a bit confused about something. The owner states is 2004. However, looking at photos the engine cover looks like a 2002. Is it even possible to put a 2002 engine in a 2004 car, and why would they? Is this a red flag?

Thanks

The 2002 and 2004 models are both from the first generation of the Mazda6; I wouldn't be at all surprised if the engines were interchangeable.

The 6 didn't hit market until 2003. Possibly motor came from a Tribute if it's an '02. Treat it like the used car it is regardless of the year of the motor. Get it checked out top to bottom by someone you trust if your unsure.
