Default First Post--Oil Leak Mystery

Hello to the Forum,

Thanks to the administrators and members--this looks like the right place to find answers to owner questions.

My particular problem--2006 Mazda6i with 2.3L DOHC four cylinder engine, has been leaking oil, burning through a quart every 2 to 3 weeks. I R&R the valve cover gasket, and that seemed to slow down the leak, but didn't stop it completely.

Upon closer inspection, I found the cause of the leak is coming from the right (driver's) side of the cylinder head. There is a plug of some sort that is located approximately between where the camshafts run. Its located behind the coolant sensor bank. This isn't on the same side as the timing chain (for the sake of clarity). The plug has a female hex-shaped head which i assume is for a pretty large Allen-type wrench fitting. Looks like the plug is steel, perhaps, as it's rusty or corroded. Either way, it doesn't appear to be aluminum.

I checked every cylinder head illustration I could find, but none identify this fitting. Is anyone familiar with this? Is is connected to anything? Any pointers on replacing this fitting? Thanks to all...

Here I was trying to be quiet and ignore this, Mmmm?

I would degrease the whole engine, making sure its spotless, then Inspect it every day until you can pinpoint the exact location of the leak. I've never seen a leak from the plug/bung.
