Default Transmission (auto) stops shifting; dash lights go out

This seems like an odd problem...at least to me.
2008 Mazda 6; I4; 2.3; 5 spd OD

Put the car in drive and off you go; sometime later the gear indicator on the dash will go out (you can no longer see what gear you are in or even if you're in D, N, R, etc; all other dash indicators are normal), and the transmission will either fail to shift up or down, or it will shift down. A slight wiggle on the gear **** sometimes corrects the problem, or I can move the shift lever over to the manual position and back and that fixes the problem.

I checked the transmission fluid and it seems to be the right color and level (I don't think fluid level has anything to do with dash indicators, but it was easy to check). I then thought it may be a gear shift selector "module" problem and found this part (although from a vendor I've not ever hear of before)...or is it maybe a cable leading to the gear shift selector that needs to be tightened?

Thank you for any advice.

Hi Max,

I’m having the exact same problem with my 2008 Mazda 2. I have had the transmission inhibitor switch replaced but am still having the same issue. Have taken it to several mechanics and Mazda but none have been able to detect the fault or solve the issue. Please let me know if you were able to get this resolved! Thanks!
