Default Tires For Mazda 6 Wagon-I seem to Be Limited To Original Tire Size?

I realize this is probably a really dumb question but I am not good with cars so forgive me.

I am looking into new tires and rims for my Mazda 6 2006 wagon. From what I am googling online it seems that the 215 50 17s that are currently on it are the only ones that are recommended for it? I see that sedans and stuff have a lot of options but from what I am seeing the internet seems to be recommending the 215 50 17s only? Maybe I'm not looking in the right places.

I was hoping to buy some 16 inch rims instead.

AM I better off keeping the current rim size and tires? I do load up the Mazda wagon fairly often (holy crap does it have a lot of room!)

Forgive my ignorance.

2006 should be 215/45/17. 2nd generation from 2008 - 2012 are 215/50/17.

Either on the driver's door ( below the latch assembly ) or on the B pillar will be the tyre placard, telling you the correct size.

Dropping down to a 16" rim from a 215/45/17 would require 205/55/16, ( which is the stock size on lower grade Mazda 6's.)
