Going downhill, tap the brakes causes the tranny to downshift from 5th to 4th: This is called engine braking; Same car speed but the now higher rpm in 4th will slow down the car. The car, without you giving it more gas, is now turning the engine instead of the engine turning the car. The whole idea is to slow down the car without burning the brakes on a long downhill. You don't use more gas because the engine can't suck gas from the closed fuel injectors since your foot is off the gas pedal. I've a BMW with a mpg gauge, so the above is from experience.
With manual tranny, we should do the same downshift to 4th on long downhills.

Well, I came to find out that i need a brand new tranny! I'm without a ride for a week but at least they gave me a free rental. I had an internal problem with the tranny so thank god for warranty!!. Nothing better than a brand new tranny. Just a thought, does driving on triptronic really uses less fuel? i heard it does but not a lot
