What some guys do for a cheap alternative to the stock wheels, is find an rx8 owner who is getting new wheels and buy theirs. This gives you 18" wheels with offsets that work for our car and they don't cost a ton.

im not sure if i want to remove the headunit, seeing as then i won't be able to to tell the temperature with it.

I think you can maintain the functionality based on this info from another thread here:

You need to get the adaptor cable, this plugs inline with the display connector, and then a single brown wire runs to the steering column and goes inline with the connector there. The Mazda part no. you need is : GS1DV6609 (this is a Uk part no. but should be the same elsewhere).
