Angry 2005 Mazda6 issues

Good Morning all,

Just joined this forum after searching for a discussion group regarding my Mazda6.

The wife and I always thought Mazdas were great cars, and for the first 71k miles it seemed that way. The craftsmanship inside and out seemed flawless. With less than 72k miles on our Mazda the main bearing spun on the timing chain side. I have spoken to Mazda service reps several times and voiced my concerns over a major issue such as this with less than 72k miles on the car. I have been told it's an isolated issue. For them maybe-for a U.S Marine I am not happy about having to pay for an engine replacement. How can it be the remanufactured engine I just had to pay thousands to have put it has a warranty of 100k, but the original engine only goes to 50k? Seems to me that Mazda doesn't put much faith in their product. On top of that the clock/radio display has several lights out, so you can't even read what channel it's on, etc.

Total cost to fix my first and last Mazda- $6, 089.98!!!!!!

Off to the roof ------------>

Just a wild guess; you have the V6 engine and not the I4. Yes, no?

Leatherneck,

No, it's the 2.3L 4-banger.

Arrrg, I've been out so long my neck seems to have lost a few of its leathery layers.

Regarding your engine, we don't hear of too many I4 issues around these parts, in fact, this is the first I've heard of this one. Do you have all of your maintenance receipts and/or was all of the maintenance performed by your dealership? If so you might be able to get them to knock a chunk off.

The 4's have been flawless from what I've seen on another Mazda board I've belonged to for 4 years now.....

Does sound like a fluke.

I have the Mazda 6 2005, V6. Also just replaced the engine - was luck to get a used one with 19,000 miles on it for 2100.00 Total of 4,000.00 to fix it.....I have a great mechanic.....prior to fixing it I was putting 2-3 quarts of oil a WEEK in it!! Yes - a WEEK! ! But now.....I want to replace the Radio display, as mine looks just like yours in the picture you posted. Where can we get a replacement for it????

Two very common problems with the 3.0 V6 is 1) the PCV staying open during WOT and the oil being drawn into the intake, burned and sent out the exhaust, and 2) the pre-cats fail and either plug-off the exhaust, or break into chunks.

If you catch the PCV issue before it drains the engine, you're ok. You MUST keep the PCV changed.

If your cats plug-off and simply stall the engine, again, you may be ok if the issue is correctly diagnosed and repaired.

If your cats break-down and chunks are drawn back into the cylinders during decleration, you're toast. Well, your engine is toast.

I change my PCV every Spring, no matter what. For $10, it's isn't worth risking gumming-up, even though I know I never will. And my pre-cats have been gone for about 2 years. I switched to headers and downstream Magnaflow cat.

My radio display is flaky too but I agree that the bearing issue sounds like a fluke of bad luck. My wife and I have had 4 different Mazdas and many years o trustworthy history; a protege 8 yrs, a 6 wagon 7 yrs, a miata 17 yrs, and a 626 for 10 yrs and (knock wood) no significant reliability issues so far. Consumer Reports will tell you that they are reasonably reliable. If you really do like the car, I would find the most economical way to fix and keep it.

Warranties are like any insurance policy, a statistical game. I am not surprised they can confidently bet that you will not have the same sort of major claim twice especially with a well maintained reliable design engine twice in the same lifetime.
