2005 Mazda 6i Problems
I have a 2005 Mazda 6i (this is the 4 cylinder, 2.3 liter engine), and I have had continual (what I presume to be transmission) problems since I purchased the vehicle. The vehicle has completely stalled out on me once. Since that time, I know the symptoms (Like when sitting at a red light, or a stop sign after a cold start) so I can compensate by putting one foot on the brake and give it a little more gas before it actually cuts out on me again. The warning sign is when a "rough idling" condition starts where the RPM's go from approximatly 800 to 350, and never comes to rest anywhere. When this originally happened to me, and even now, I was outraged that a NEW CAR would actually do this.
Secondly, the car seems to have shifting problems. IE: It cannot decide what gear to go into. When it does get into gear it really JUMPS into gear. These shifting problems have created, what I believe, is a safety hazard while on the road. (this is in the automatic mode, by the way) While the car is deciding what to do, traffic is still moving and the car may move slower or faster depending on how it reacts at that time. My driving style is pretty simple...I don't have a problem obeying the speed limit, and I'm a careful driver.
I have taken the car back to the dealership I bought it from several times. Each time, their solution was to provide updates or flash the TCM. However, since the problem(s) are sporadic, their techs have been unable to produce these problems themselves, and they are never with me when it happens. Consequently, when I go to the dealer, I'm being met with much disbelief. (I have under 10000 miles on the vehicle currently and I originally reported it to them when it was just over 2000 miles)
Again, I'm very disappointed in the performance of this vehicle, and wanted to write and see if there is anyone else out there going through the same thing with the same vehicle.
(2005 Mazda 6i, 4 cylinder, 2.3 liter) Any solutions to this problem would be most welcome, but again, I want to see if there are any other consumers out there that are experiencing the same problems. Thanks.

wwow. sounds like a lemon. I am terribly sorry to hear that you are having problems. I have just under 20,000 miles on my 2.3 liter 4 speed and have had no major problems.
This is kindof a stumper. TCM sounds like it could be the culprit. The TCM should be using all the variables such as vehicle speed and throttle position, egine speed, etc to decide what gear to put the car in. IF the tps was bad though, it could also cause these problems.

Curiosity,
I’ll rely on the above with the transmission control module if it controls all those aspects. Or an idle valve or throttle position sensor. If this has been happening more than once awhile then I would try some of the following:
Take note under which conditions make these instances reoccur. When you go to the dealership, give them the details. I was a Saturn Service advisor and my job was to troubleshoot problems like yours so give the advisor all the details you can. Don’t accept a write up that says transmission problem shifting. The technician gets this, scratches his head and has to start from zero.
If you can get it to happen, tell the service advisor that you would like to take him or a technician for a ride to reproduce the event.
If you can’t make it happen under these circumstances, tell them you need to speak with the service manager. Tell him that your Mazda has been back here a few times and request if a technician take the car home for a day or two so the problem surfaces when he is driving. A loaner should be given to you. My good friend is a GM technician and has this done once a while.
Good Luck.

Sounds like a lemon! Neither one of my 6's has done anything like that! Neither have any of the guys in my local clubs! I am really sorry about that! I hate to hear the person that got the 1out of a 100 lemon, especially when it's a 6!
I'd ask the guys on www.mazda6tech.com ! all the guys there are certified techs who will give you the hoest truth, not what the dealer wants them to say. They even help with mods!
Good Luck!

hey,
i have the same car (i'm not sure if yours has the sport package too though) and i haven't had any problems quite like yours. altho i have noticed that SOMETIMES at idle, the RPM's do dip down considerably low (well below idle range) but only when i'm in park. BTW, does anyone know why it does this?!?!?! it drives me crazy! it feels like its going to stall sometimes! i don't know what state your in but you should check to see if you have a Lemon Law like we do in California!!! Good luck!

Hi Guys I'm new here ,and I don't speak english well , so give me a credit. I have Mazda 6i 2005 and I have already 33000 miles, I know it's big. Realy what's bothering me - I can hear fuel moving when I stops, or braking, (only hapening when tank is ful of fuel ). If You can tell me is this somehing what i should be worried?
I have the same year and model as your car and it does the same thing, I notice when I'm going at a steady pace, I could be going along at about 30mph and all of a sudden it kick up to for and jump down to third, or sometimes it will just rev up on its own like it was in neutral or something, I mentioned to my dealer when I first got the car, I bought it brand new and now has 13,000 mi on it, but they said the same thing about and update, so I new it was going to be one of those things where they would have be therewhen it happened so I thought I would just bite the bullet till I trade it in...at least I know its not just mine, oh yeah I work with a guy who has a 6i, and his does it tooo...I forgot about that...
