mazda is part of ford and i know ford has the same problem on some models
This is totally unrelated to Ford. The Mazda5 is designed and made in Japan. There are models with cross over parts/chassis/block etc, but this is not one of them.

Default It is totally related

mazda 3, volvo s 40 and ford focus have the same frame and suspentions
thay take bids from the cheapest manufacturers and they buy volumes
all that because of low cost ...
even the mustang eats tires... explorer had a hudge lawsuit and bridgestone was involved ...
i will never buy any car built by one of the ford's factories but you all are free to do as you please

and i will bet money it is more like mexico then japan ))

As possibly the first person to notice this anomalie in 2005 when I first got my Five. I have had many new sets of tyres, but since the car came out of warranty, I hot footed it to my trusted tyre depot. They set the alignment on the lazer jig and replaced the worn tyres with Khumo rubber. Apart from having to check the tyre pressures weekly. They do fluctuate rapidly, and having the balance checked at the first sign of wobble. All is well.
MMUK know all about the problem, both front and rear, but are not doing anything about it. It will take an accident that can be directly linked before anything will be done.
My advice would be to walk away from Mazda and get the car sorted at a reliable place. This goes for servicing as well.

Default NHTSA place to file complaint about tire issue

Hello everyone, I would like to start off by saying hello to everyone on this forum as I just joined. Well I have been reading on many forums of the tire wear issue on the Mazda5 and I would like to share my experience also, I have a 2006 mazda5 that I bought new in June of 2006. Since then the car has only been driven a total of 22,000 miles. At 21,000 miles I had to replace the original Toyo tires because they were worn down to the cords on the inside of the rear tires, but the outside still looked like they could go another couple thousand miles and they had been rotated every 7,000 miles. Went to dealer to see if they would do anything about it and they told me to call Mazda USA about the problem because they could not do anything, so I called mazda usa and one of there reps told me that again they could do nothing about the problem, and to file a complaint to NHTSA because they are the ones who actually make the recalls on cars NOT Mazda. I filed a complaint yesterday on the NHTSA website and also saw that there have been about 6 or 7 complaints about the tire issue, but I guess its not enough complaints to start an investigation. I would just like to ask anyone else who has this problem to go to the NHTSA site and file a complaint so they can see thats its actually a major problem and start an investigation which will hopefully bring a recall that will fix the car.

Here is the link to the NHTSA website, http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/index.cfm

Sorry about the writing being so long, just wanted to explain my situation and how it can fixed.

Default now got 10k miles from front tyres

Well we are back from our grand month long European tour (France, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Austria, Hungary, Romania, Luxemburg and Belgium. The car was fully loaded and a roof box (340litre). Tyres at 38psi. They are the Dunlop Sport Maxx and have now covered over 10000 miles and are very fair and acceptable. They went well over there as the weather was always hot and sunny, Whereas in the UK I say they perform poorly. At the point up to Paris I got 36MPG. But because of my rate of heading home at 190km/h (GPS's) as clock showed 140 (way out) I ended with an overall consumption of 25MPG. Bear in mind I had roof box, loaded, headlights on and A/C on set to 15° (mostly) for all the driving time. Car gets it's very late service next Wednesday. I think I have a dirty injector now as it misses 'beats' sometimes and splutters.
So I say 38psi all round and on these tyres the edge and the wear limit indicators will be both worn at the same time and you can't ask for more in this instance. Still waiting for reply from SMMT from letter I sent over a month ago about Mazda talking about rear tyre issue instead or front tyre issue. I need to chase, but problem here may delay this 'chasing up'.

Default Newbie about to buy

Hi, i'm about to collect a 56 plate 2007 Mazda5 2.0D Sport from a local UK Mazda dealer, and am concerned to read this tyre wear news, having learnt nothing about it on more regular news sites such as HonestJohn etc.

The front tyres are bald but evenly worn IMO, the back tyres are sound with plenty of tread. the dealer is going to replace the fronts as part of the PDI. The car has done 35k miles.

Should i walk away from this deal with it's 12 month ZZ+ warranty, or continue? I love the practicality and drive, plus the economy is pretty good too.

Addition: Dealer tells me that the car in question has had the relevant recall notice served on it. Without seeing the documentation, i wonder whether there's any method to check this?

Thanks, Chalky

There is a bit about the tyre wear on Honest John. Even if the car has had the recall, it dosn't mean it's fixed. I've just had the 12th tyre fitted in 29,000 miles!!!!!!!!!!!!! This time the car was sent by the dealer to a specialist for a full digital alignment after about 6 attempts by the dealer to stop the tyre wear.

Default Is tyre wear still an issue?

Hi,

I'm trying to decide between buying a 2009 new Mazda 5 (probably 2010 now as we're getting near the end of the year) or a two-year old used Mazda 5. Does anyone know whether the new cars still have the same problem with excessive tyre wear? I've already had a car written off after a blowout on the motorway (on brand new tyres so it was probably due to a manufacturing defect) so I'm a little concerned about this problem. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Aurora

Ours is a 2008 Sport 2.0TD. We've covered nearly 20000 miles and are still on the first set of tyres. There is some wear evident on the inside edge of the front tyres and I rotated them to try and even the wear out. The rear tyres are wearing evenly. The centre section of the tread is about 50% worn. I think we'll be looking at around 30000 miles before all four will need replacing. I'll be happy with that.

We've had a couple of issues with the car but the dealer sorted them out quickly and I'm actually quite liking it at the moment. However, we did have an RX8 before, so it was a hard act to follow.I'd buy another RX8 tomorrow if it could do more than 22mpg!
