Default Cost for Breaks

Hi all,

I need to get the front breaks on my M5 replaced. Car has 124,000 KM's on it now, and they are down to 3mm. Just had an inspection and they are telling me to get them replaced.

Any idea what the average cost for this would be? I will check around etc, but curious what others have paid so I have an idea if someone is overcharging or not.

Cheers,

Scott

The only thing I can say is I replaced the fronts on my 02 Tribute this summer. Here in Tulsa there is a chain (actually several) of auto parts stores. This one, Autozone I use as I get money off future purchases when I buy from them. My Mazda does need new rotors (thats what happens when your wife lets her friends drive the wheels off it), I just replaced the pads they were $20 USD. Rotors list for $39 each (USD). I did the work myself, so labor I couldn't tell you other than any dealer or respective shop can give you a labor estimate.

Update: I have had two quotes so far:

1: $385 parts and labour! (Ouch - and no talk about the rotors!)

2: a.) new pads, rotors machined: $275 parts and labour
2: b.) If rotors need replacing then $435 parts and labour

#2 Doesnt think that the rotors will need replacing, just a worst case scenario, but he hasn't seen the car yet either. Just quotes by phone.

I fitted new pads to mine, cost me £25. Fitted them myself which took an hour.

$275 sounds more like it depending on the shop rate, if they cut the rotors though that adds some time (therefor money) to the job compared with just having them replace the rotors. You can get rotors on Rockauto.com for much cheaper depending on how cheap you want to go. I also think they are soaking you on the "new" set as well, it takes MUCH more labor to cut a rotor than it costs to just replace the rotor. I would buy your own rotors and pads and give them to the mechanics to use if your not comfortable replacing them yourself.

Hold down kits anyone?

Now i'm going to be either a pain or sarcastic, either way i can't resist:
"Breaks" don't cost me anything, it costs the company! I'm on break most of the time because i don't have a real job currently!
Cost of breaks depends on how much you get paid and how long you take!
This spelling can be either 1) lunch break, afternoon break OR 2) you break something (like i'm sure right now you're thinking of breaking my Noggin, LOL)

Whoops!!!! I know the difference between breaks and brakes. My fingers dont seem to want to type brake though. Whatever, its the internet, not like I have a professor grading my forum posts

What if you break your brakes, or brake your breaks?. I hate it when my lunch break is stooped, and equally as much when my brakes are broken.

It was good for a hoot. We know what you meant.
I just couldn't resist. Carry on, glad to have you.

Wasn't sure if it was a trick question?
