Somehow, the nut from the top of the strut is no longer there, completely gone. This would be the nut that holds the compressed spring in place. We bought a set of replacement Monroe quick struts, but we worry about following normal procedures for replacing them. The car(my son's) is a 2006 Mazda 5 Any thoughts...??

The shocks should come with new nuts. Otherwise you will need to order them from Mazda.
