Just wondering if the 3 is a big step up from a Saturn S-series, or not, in terms of performance, interior space, comfort, features etc.

I have a '98 SL2 with 85,000 miles on it, and could probably keep it for another 10 years if I wanted, it's been a great car. But after visiting a Mazda dealership, I'm in lust with the Mazda3 S Touring or GT. I haven't test driven one, because if I do, I'll probably end up buying it, and my wallet and wife would both kill me.

 

Actually my wife has a 2004 Saturn Ion-2, and I have a '06 3i w/2.0L. The Mazda is step up in everyway from the Saturn, especially in the power department, the Saturn has none, and the Mazda has good power the size engine. The front seats actually seem to ride higher than the Saturn as well, giving a better view of the road, and easier to get in and out of. The Mazda is more comfortable as well. All in all, the Mazda is a better all around car than the Saturn, in my opinion

 

I have a 1999 Saturn SL2 with about 95,000 mile son it,..i bought a 2006 Mazda 3 GT with the 2.3L.
The Mazda is ALOT better,....more features,..better interior quality,...faster (although my little saturn with the 4 cyl. is pretty quick) handles a TON better,..when it's windy my Saturn gets blown all over the road,.where as my Mazda stays planted. My Mazda rails thru turns, where the Saturn can't corner as quick. There really is a huge difference between the two...the Mazda is a ton better. My Saturn does get better gas mileage tho.
