Mazda 2 2011 Steering sounds

My steering is maiking clunking / knocking sounds, and starts to make whirring noises on occasion when steering close to lock. Is this common and is it likely to be expensive as hell.

No it is not normal, and you should have a garage (in GB) inspect your suspension and steering.
