Hi All, i've tried using the search function and found a couple of threads on this but none really answer the question or have gone unanswered.
I'm trying to hardware my dashcam in and need to find a) a constant fuse for it to work with and b) a relatively easy place to put the earth wire.
I could play around with the fuses but its a little chilly outside and my fingers are cold, so i'm calling it a night for now. Hopefully I can get some answers for tomorrow.
The more difficult one is where to connect the earth wire. I cant see anywhere obvious. One other thread suggested removing the glove box but I couldnt see how and didnt want to start yanking things about.
The *ground or earth wire is any metal you find is the easiest to attach the wire.
The *12volt ignition active can be any fuse you can install a piggy back with fuse jump connector into the circuit that is active when the ignition is in start position or when the engine has started. You can easily find a fuse that does this with a simple volt/ohm gauge. Check to make sure but most dash cams are 2 or 3 amp a few 5 amp so check fuses that are at least 5 or, 7 or 10 amp powered protected circuit equal or greater then the value for the dash cam.
*most Dash cams come with a 2 wire cable long enough to go from most mounting location on the das or windshield all the way down to the fuse panel. This makes location a ground connection much easier then trying to divide the 2 wire lead and mount a ground close to the das cam.
Hi,
It's almost a necessity to have a dash cam these days for evidence with the way people drive now. My solution was to buy a body cam like the police use. I wear it whenever I walk the dogs for the same reason.
The one I have is HD quality and does color and infrared for night use. It came with two replaceable holders, one with the clip to attach to a coat or belt. The other without the clip which I made a wooden piece which fit the curve of the back of the display monitor. Then I applied "Velcro" to attach the camera. It holds very well and the camera doesn't flop around. The USB cable that came with the body cam will fit a phone charger and I plug that into the DC output jack in the front of the console so I don't run down the battery in the body cam.
I fitted a hard wired dashcam to both front and rear the front was pretty easy the rear not so much I found an empty fuse slot in the interior fusebox that was switched on with the ignition I cannot remember the number but if you have a voltage tester it's pretty easy to find which one you need with the ignition off put one probe into one of the empty slots and the other to earth if there is no reading turn on the ignition and see if you get 12volts that's the one you want. It helps if you have someone to be turning the ignition on/off whilst testing
if you cannot find a spare slot then use the piggyback fuse and find a fuse that Callisto recommend or what the video suggest.
the first link is for the Mazda 2 fuse boxes and the second is not a million miles away for fitting the dashcam to your car.
