Hello,

I have a 1.3 2010 73000 due an oil change and I was just looking for some tips, some sites say 10w 40 a shop said 0w 20, but I thought 5w 30 was the way to go. Without my manual I can't check for sure but I was wondering what you all used please.

Download a manual from Mazda's web site. In the UK my bet is the recommendation is either 5W-20 or 5W-30; you should not use 10W-40 under any circumstances, that oil is way too thick when cool and not thin enough when fully warm to allow for optimal engine efficiency.

 

Winter time 5w30, summer time 10w30. Either is ok year round. Just make sure it's a A3/B4 spec.

5w30 is the manufacturers recommended engine oil UK when the engine is new from factory and would be the safe choice if unsure. If you have a higher mileage car maybe 50k+ you could look at a heavier weight of oil, but keep the winter weight the same, so 5w40 could be beneficial for the engines bedded in moving parts.

 

Fifty thousand miles doesn't even come close to being a "higher mileage" car; three times that, "yes", but these days 50,000 miles is barely broken in. That said, I wouldn't recommend 5W-40 for one of these engine even if it had well over a quarter of a million miles.

I'm terribly sorry for that! These are purely recommended oils for the Mazda 2 1.3 55kw/75kw spec engine. I've just changed the oil in the the little car after about a year ownership and the oil that came out it was nowhere near 5w more in tune of 10-15w, which is far to thick I'm my opinion for start-up especially in the winter! Even after warm-up the oil was more of a 40 than 30- oil, but even with this spec oil the great little car was producing between 44-51mpg, so I'm quite happy with that as this is the main benefit running the lower viscosity oils.

And exactly what is that supposed to represent; certainly not proof an xW-40 is appropriate for one of these Mazda engines.

 

I'd run with 5W-30 if that's what is recommended, maybe the high mileage variety. You're getting to that threshold and it can't hurt. Any brand you can get a deal on. Were they calling for 0W-20 that long ago? Are you going with full synthetic?

 

The owners manual also should have compatible other options. I've only ever came across one car that was fussy on oil spec, which never did any damage to the relief of the customer who did the oil change before hand. I don't think we need to be saying who's right or wrong as we could cause unnecessary and even more confusion to others looking for help!
