Question rust build up

Just a general questions, I ve been working on installing water pump timing belt. Low aand behold I received wrong water pump, I have one on order now. I live in a very moist part of the country, so instead of putting everything back together I left it all apart on jacks and stands, I've noticed a little spotted rust clolr start forming around where water pumpp goes also around cam and crank spockets. Should I worry about this? Is there a good way of cleaning this up?

Also if I was working with the vavle cover off and the spark plugs out and it sarted to rain quiet heavily should I worry about water damage to the motor? Or any parts siezing up on me? I was told by someone to just spary it down with wd40 is this a good idea???

I'm hoping to put this project to bed today. Again wheater may be issue where I have to work in the rain again today. If I only had a garage

did rain get inside the engine? if so if you get it up and running soon you should have no issues but if its going to sit with that water for a week you might have rust because those parts inside the motor are not treated or painted its exposed steal. wd40 would lift the water off the parts so its an option
