Default RPM @ Idle

Can someone tell me what the normal Idle speed is after the cooling fan kicks on. In park, and drive holding the brake. ( this is a 92 Protege with a 1.8l DOHC)
Thanks alot,
Bob

What is the idle doing exactly. Too high, too low, surges??

It is surging and eratic. When it is in gear the idle is around 1100 rpm. If I take it out of gear it will go up to 2300 rpm at first and then settle back down to 1500. Sometimes it is smooth at idle, and other times it has a slight miss. It always stays above a normal rpm for idle no matter how it is running. Besides the high idle it runs great at highway speeds always.
Thanks alot,
Bob

Sounds like your Idle Speed Control valve is stuck open. The ISC valve is located under the throttle body and has a black rubber hose going to it that also connects to the intake air hose off of the air cleaner housing. Try pinching that hose closed and see if the idle speed drops down or stalls. If it does then is a good indication of valve stuck.

Hi, I'm having iddle problems also but mine are low . I have a 99 protege close to 100k 1.6L. The idle at gear with load drop to 500 and surges briefly to 400 and goes back up. It doesn't stall but when it drops to 400 rpm it looks like its going to stall. This happens when the vehicle is stopped, when is driving is fine. I was thinking that maybe the catalyst converter is clogging up. I haven't check for codes.Do you think that I just need to adjust the iddle? I haven't had any engine work done and I think the plugs are due for replacement.
