Default Protege5 won't crank intermittently

Seems like a common problem, but mine isn't any of the usual causes. It's a 2002 prot.5 auto. About 40 percent of the time, there will just be a click from the pass side airbag area and starter area. The interior lights don't dim at all.
Battery and starter were replaced, no change. The TR switch doesn't seem to be the issue, as putting it in park or neutral has no effect on the problem. It will literally no crank one second, then the next start right up. Anyone have any insight?

Check, even install a new chassis to engine ground wire. Another notorious problems with Protos.
If that doesn't work, check the main fuse under the hood. Remove it, clean it, replace it if necessary.

Possibly the electrical portion of the ignition switch. They are pretty cheap and are a common problem. You will need to check it with a volt meter. Remove the column cover and test there first. There is also a starter relay in the circuit.
