I have a 2001 Mazda familia 1.5L VVTi @ navisports car and i bought it from Japan in December 2014. Since i bought it i have never seen the EML go on on start up. Is it possible that they were factory made without the EML?

 

If you turn the key on without starting the vehicle the check engine/service engine light should stay on.

 

Yes, that's a bulb check. Check the bulb, it may be burnt out.
