Hi guys,

My cousin just gave me a 1998 or 1999 Mazda protege. I will have the car this week and he couldn't tell me much information besides that. Not sure what motor, but sounds like a rod bearing went. Would it be better to rebuild the motor or buy a used motor? Just wondering if anyone has done this. The car will be used for a backup car / trip vehicle!

Thank You!

Welcome to the forum!

Find a used motor. It is cheaper than rebuilding and the car is too old to put much money into it.

Awesome thanks for the reply! If I get a used motor what are things I should replace while it is out? I know the timing components for sure, but anything else?

Replace thermostat, all fluids, all filters & spark plugs. Won't hurt to do cam & crank seals while its sitting on the floor.
