Default help 96 Pro with tranny problems

I have a 96 Protege that wants to stay in gear. Let me explain. It was fine yesterday and when I went to leave work today. I put it in drive and no go. I then put it in second and off I went. when I got home I waited for it to cool down to get under the hood to see if any wires were unpluged but It looks ok. I again went for a test drive and put it in drive and off I went but it didn't want to shift into second gear so I put it in neutral and back to drive and it shifted but it will not shift on its own. I can even get it to shift to third or anything. I need help as I work 35 miles from my home and this is my only car. Thank you...

Default Fluid

I would check the fluid level and smell it to see if it has a BURNT smell. Should be clean and not BLACK.Might just be low. Does it shift good when it gets warm?
