For manual transmissions that's exactly what they should be using; for automatic transmission equipped cars like yours, gear oil would bring about a quick and expensive death to the transmission.

There is no difference between 4-cyl and 8-cyl cars as far as fluid types. Now the specifics of what's used may vary from one manufacturer to another but an automatic requires automatic trans fluid (ATF.)

For engine oil, use what the manufacturer recommends (owners manual, under hood decals, the oil filler cap, repair manuals, etc)... even w/200,000kms on it. If they want it to use 10w-30 then use it. If they want 5w-20 then use that. You should not deviate just because the car has a few miles on it. That's an old wives tale.
Remember, it's the second number (15, 20, 30, 40, 50) *EDIT* not the first (0, 5, 10, 20,) that determines the viscosity of the fluid. THAT is the most important number for any given engine builder/designer.

What virgin1 said and skip the flush; that'll save you money and your car won't know the difference.
