Just found this site, registered myself, and am seeking the advice of all you Protege experts.

I've got a manual 1991 Protege DX thats developed a loud shifter-rattle. It rattles in all gears but is more pronounced in 3rd, and 5th gear. [:@]

If keep my hand on the shifter and apply a small amount of pressure towards 'Neural', the rattling stops.

Any ideas on what I should look into for this?

sounds like an exhaust mount is blown. the shifter is closer to the mid-pipe in 3rd and 5th and if the exhaust mounts are blown, it will cause the shifter to hit the exhaust. which is why the problem is more pronounced in 3rd and 5th.
