Default Knocking sound

Hello there.
This could be a 'CV' joint wearing out. Best to get under the front end and check the flexible rubber boots that cover the inboard and outboard joints on the drive shafts from the transfer case to the wheels. If any of these have failed, then dirt has gotten in and worn out the constant velocity (CV) joint. If this is the case, your only recourse is CV joint replacement.
I haven't had this done on my 93 Protege yet, but I have on a previous car (96 Suzuki Swift). I don't know where you are, but here in Vancouver BC this was about a $500 to $600 job.

Good luck with it!

CV joints click. if they are knocking they are about to fall off. I have a 96 626 with new struts and cv joints and boots. I have the same problem and cannot figure out where it is coming from. It knocks when you hit a bump. it sounds like it is from the right front. I have checked brake shoes and calipers. I have tugged on anything that is suspension oriented and nothing feels loose. It really sounds like a strut bushing is bad but both are new? anyone with a suggestion?

I suspect lower ball joints or sway bar links and sway bar bushings. The links are easy to check. Jack op the car and, remove the wheel. use a long screw driver or tire iron and going under the way bar put the end of the tool on top of the control arm. Now push up on the sway bar and keep an eye on the sb link. if the link has play it is worn.
(Don't buy moog links with grease nipples, they are too beefy and the nipples interfere with the struts.)
Inspect the sway bar bushings.
The Haynes manual describes how to check the lower ball joints.
