1996 mazda protege cam position sensor
i'm trying to inspect my camshaft position sensor in my 96 protege. i'm following the instructions listed in the workshop manual on page f2-45. I got to #4 and I need help.. I don't know what an engine signal monitor is. also, you can txt me at (205)764-8454 thanks..
Looks rather evil doesn't it.
Take the cap and rotor off. There should be a cover below the rotor. Below that cover sits the cam position sensor. Get some electronics cleaner that will completely evaporate and spray it clean. Put it back together with a new O-ring and cross your fingers.
This diagram is of the wrong year. Non the less it should help you. Instead of a "crank angle sensor" you have a cam position sensor. Also the coil is built into the distributor.

How old is that rotor ?

That's exactly what I was thinking I had to do. I believe it is the stock rotor from the factory because it is a Mitsubishi part and I also noticed that the crankshaft position sensor was a Mitsubishi part too.
There are a lot of Mitsubishi parts throughout the car, mostly sensors and electrical parts. I bet it would be a good thing to replace the cap and rotor anyway. If you agree you can gently chisel the old one off.
