Does theProtege 5 have a interference motor?

The wife was out picking someone up and at idle the car died and when she went to restart the car and she said it made popping noise and that was about it.I don't have the keys to see what its currently doing,it sound like the startersare turning, butnot cranking the engine. From the few peopleI have talk to they say it sounds like the timing belt, but if ithas aninterference motor, I might have another problem on my hands.

well i had found from mazda tech that timing belt does not effect that.
