Tailgate latch is broken

Tailgate latch is broken
I just bought an 89 B2200 with a cap over the the bed. The glass window of the cap will open but I can't open the tailgate because the latch is broken. I tried pulling the latch from the inside but it still won't come down. Any ideas on how I could possibly fix it or just get a new tailgate? I kind of need to open it because I need to get some crap in there that won't fit through just the pull up window.
Anybody else have this problem or could give me some incite on how to go about just installing a new latch?

RE: Tailgate latch is broken
I take you have removed the inspection/access cover on the inside as you report that you tried to pull it from the inside. Just pull both rods that are extending out to the latches inward and it should release so you can get the tailgate open and see what is broken. Is usually the outer latch handle itself which is very easy to install a new one.

Yeah, I believe that it is just the handle itself on the outside. I have tried pulling the two rods inward from the inside though and still couldn't get it to come down. I'll try it again today and just try a little harder.

RE: Tailgate latch is broken
Go to any NAPA autoparts store and ask to look in the Parts, supplies and Accessories (PSA) catalog.
The tailgate handles for Mazda trucks are in there.
I looked one up today for a customer and myself (I work for NAPA), Here is the NAPA Balkamp number:
735-5054 Tailgate handle Mazda Pickups 1986-1993
Prices very by store, so I would call you nearest store to get it.
Hope this helps,
Pete
