We bought my wife's Contour for 3500 cash, add 500 for initial repairs, also paid in cash. We have it now for 8 years, doing about 5k miles per year: yearly cost less than 1000.
Our Windstar is not that cheap but we have been doing 20K miles per year. Yearly cost: roughly 2200 per year.
These figures include purchase, repairs, maintenance like oil changes, tranny services. They do not include insurance, registration, fuel, parking fees.
Keep an excel worksheet for your car expenses. That gives you a good basis for the financial decisions regarding your vehicle.
