the shifter on our 94' m series (1.8L) miata was broken. it is stuck in reverse although the shifter is in the N position, but wont go over into where 5th and reverse are. we were told thatthe shifters shaftsnapped somewhere bellow and we probably need to take out the engine and tranny. has anyone had this problem before? is it an easy fix? any idea as to how much it would be if it was taken to a shop?

 

never had the problem, but it seems to me like the motor and tranny wouldn't have to come out. i think that you could get to it just by pulling the linkage piece by piece. at worst, i think that you would have to drop the tranny a little and pull the drive shaft. mechanics here charge about $75/hr. and this sounds like an honest days worth of work.
