I've never heard of these engines with a failed head gasket. That is often the assumption when coolant mixes with oil...usually correct but not always. The problem seems to always be cracking of the metal of the cylinder head. Sometimes the coolant leak is discovered before the engine is destroyed, and a cylinder head is replaced. If not found in time the engine is damaged beyond economical repair and a new engine is needed. Yours is the first we've heard of happening twice.
PTguy, you seem very knowledgeable, maybe you can help me understand what’s going on with my car. Brand new 2019 CX-9 sport fully serviced at dealership and on time with all oil changes and maintenance packages (even though I knew I was being overcharged , I didn’t care because of the peace of mind I believed I was buying).
At 62K check engine light comes on (Sep 2021). Dealer states an engine replacement is needed and will do it as “good will” since warranty only covers up to 60k. After 90 days I finally received my vehicle back.
Fast forward 30k miles (Sep 2022) and the check engine light is on again! This time dealer took 30 days for diagnosis and states engine needs to be replaced again, this time on my dime for 9.5K.
After reading the original invoice for the first engine replacement I noticed something odd. Although the service advisor told me the engine was “fully replaced “ the paperwork documents a partial replacement due to cylinder misfire. All they replaced was a gasket and intake valve, does that count as an engine replacement?? Also, buried in the paperwork is mention of coolant replacement. I’m very disappointed and feel like they’re trying to deceive me. What’s your take? Attached are snippets of the invoice . Thanks in advance for any insight.

The first line of the parts list is "Engine, partial-conventio..." That is the new engine. I don't know what they define as a partial engine, certainly excluding alternator, turbocharger, etc. Anyway, that's the new engine. And a bunch of gaskets, o-rings, and some automatic transmission fluid was lost somewhere in the process so that was replaced. Coolant must be drained when the engine is taken out, so new coolant is filled into the new engine. This much sounds OK.
Another new engine?...Check with Mazda North America, (800) 222-5500. Tell them what has happened. If they too say that another engine is needed, ask them why, and ask them what you should have done differently after the first replacement engine (they won't have an answer). The fault in these engines is Mazda's problem, and they should not try to make it the customer's problem.
2016 80k miles, no problems yet on this. Luckily i have a 100k extended warranty, if it happens i hope it fails before then. Good luck guys with your endeavors.
Max, read the fine print in your extended service contract. (It is legally not a warranty.) We've seen some that say that only oil lubricated parts are covered. That does not cover cracked castings.

Dealership denies an issue with this engine. Pretty underhanded of Mazda to pretend this issue doesn't exist. My cx9 has been in the shop for 5 months. Not dishing
out 10 grand for a new motor, and if you put in a used one, you cancel out any chance of a repair from Mazda on there dime. Sucks!. I do like this truck and was enjoying
it. This situation destroyed my faith in Mazda....Zoom..Zoom...bull...Zoom zoom money out of your back account! I would appreciate any update on developments
regarding class action, if anyone has joined one or if a recall is in the works. Thanks

How long do you think WARANTY last on anything. As you said ITS OUT OF WARRANTY! Wow! I can read and understand that.
I also read that you don't understand how legal matters actually work. You can always sue in small claims court or if you have the time and the money to post in advance file a civil suit. But please don't say that a auto manufacture will wash their hands of any issue! Each out of warranty claim is handled individually and maybe re-read all the communication from you and the dealership and MAZDA more carefully!
You can post up that information from them and maybe some us us can help you understand it?
I will be surprised if there is actually a class action suit for this. I would recommend looking into how class action suits start and work. This Mazda issues so few are having IMHO will never see a class action suit.
I also suggest that before you start to bad mouth a dealership that you first understand that they are an independent business first and foremost. Something most don't realize of flat understand. They CAN refuse service to anyone!!!!! LOL

Bulletins from an auto manufacture are not recalls nor are TSBs. Both are misunderstood what their actual purpose is for, and neither is a recall. If you need further explanation, please post the exact information from MAZDA regarding what you think may include you?

However, as it appears you are new to those if you get involved you had better read the contract and fine print who, what and where the end results may be and how long before you may receive any compensation.
Just an FYI in support of the notion that not all extended warranties are created equal. I bought my 2019 Mazda CX-5 Signature at an Auto Nation dealership, now with 66,000 miles and noticing some unexplained coolant drips on my garage floor. Naturally, I became concerned. When I purchased the car the dealer naturally tried to sell me an extended warranty even though I knew I could get one for less in the open market. They did point out these cars are getting far more complicated than in years past just due to the safety features, let alone the onboard electronics, advanced AWD technologies, turbochargers, etc. I mean I love this CX-5 Signature for those reasons. After haggling a bit, I probably over paid by $500 (or maybe not, in hindsight) but felt they, too, had some skin in the game and might not just sell me any mediocre contract given they stood to benefit from any future repairs. They sold me their 72 month or 100,000 miles Platinum plan for a list price of $2750, managed by Motor Warranty Services of North America, but I haggled down the vehicle price $500, so effectively $2250. When I heard about the engine issue and did some research to verify, including reading this thread, I was very concerned with the $10,000 engine replacement price tag. In reading my Vehicle Protection Plan, here’s what it said (excluded issues from any component below for normal wear and tear):
“ENGINE Gasoline Engine - All internal lubricated pars including but not limited to: (Balance shafts, Cam bearings, Cam tower, Camshaft, Connecting rods, Crankshaft, Cylinder Block, Cylinder Head, Harmonic balancer and retainer bolt, Lifters, Oil filter adapter/housing, Oil pump and pressure relief valve, Piston rings, Pistons, Pushrods, Rocker arms (cam followers),Rod and main bearings, Timing belt and pulleys, timing belt tensioner, Timing chain housing (cover), Timing chain and sprockets, Valve springs, Valves and guides, Wrist pins). Crankshaft pulley, Dipstick and tube, Engine mounts, Engine oil cooler and hoses, Engine oil sending unit, Expansion (freeze) plugs, Flywheel, Fuel supply pump, Intake and exhaust manifolds, Oil Pan, Oil pump housing, Temperature sending unit, thermostat and housing, Vaccum pump, Valve covers, Water pump, Fasteners for the components.
Turbocharged/Supercharged/Rotary/Diesel/Enhanced engines - All of the above listed parts or equivalent plus: bypass valve, Clutch and Pulley. Compressor, Hard lines, Injection pump, Intercooler, Lines and nozzles, Supercharger, Turbocharger, Waste gate controller”
Naturally, I was relieved to see the Cylinder Block and Cylinder Head were covered, as well as the Turbocharger! In hindsight, even the list $2750 price tag would have been worth it. For those of you not as fortunate, I have been recently getting feeds on by FB about the class action suit and I see a link in this thread. Yeah, it could take a while. You might also consider swapping out your engine for an engine of a later year model not part of the TSB, one in a vehicle that was rear ended as someone posted below. Carefully do the math, though, because labor is a big part of the expense.
