Default Repair CX9 or send it to the wreckers

We have a CX9 2012 with 310,000kms (195,000 miles) on the clock.

Always been reliable and no major issues. However, recently the check engine light came on and ran rough. Engine scan indicated ignition coil problem so we replaced all 6 ignition coils and spark plugs. This did not fix the problem and further Mazda scan indicated one of the injectors needs replacing. They recommended all 6 injectors be replaced. Along with this they recommended 2 x rear rocker covers need replacing due to an oil leak.

Mazda also indicated possible noise in transmission/transfer case which is a known fault on these vehicles.

My question is could anyone provide opinions or advice on whether they think it is worthwhile proceeding with this work?

I look at it that maybe the vehicle has just come to the end of its life as haven't seen many around with milage much higher than ours. I can get a bit of money from wreckers for vehicle vs outlaying more money to get it back on the road. The transmission/transfer potential noise concerns me. We are getting a new car so this would become a second car should we go ahead with the injector/rocker cover work and I'd be happy to get another couple of years out of it.

Key Considerations:

  1. High Mileage: At 310,000 km (195,000 miles), the vehicle has reached a significant lifespan, increasing the likelihood of further issues.
  2. Current Problems:
    • Injectors: Replacing all 6 is logical given their wear at this mileage.
    • Valve Cover Gaskets: Fixing the oil leaks is necessary to prevent further issues.
    • Transmission Noise: This could indicate a costly repair, making it the most concerning issue.
  3. Cost vs. Benefit:
    • Repairs (injectors, gaskets, potential transmission) could cost thousands.
    • The CX-9's market value at this mileage is limited, even if repaired.
    • It could still serve as a second car for a couple more years if repairs are made.

Options:

  1. Partial Repairs: Fix injectors and gaskets but monitor the transmission. Use the car as long as it runs safely.
  2. Sell or Scrap: If transmission failure seems imminent, sell the car for parts or scrap to avoid further expenses.
  3. Use Until Failure: Perform minimal repairs and drive it until a major failure occurs.

Recommendation:

If transmission noise is minor, repair the injectors and gaskets to extend its life. However, if transmission repairs seem likely, it’s better to sell or scrap the vehicle and avoid further investment. Consult a trusted mechanic for a detailed assessment of the transmission.

Welcome to the forum.

hmm.... interesting first post as a new member so I will go easy on you...

This recommendation is just BAD about the transmission.
You should always go to a service shop that advertises specializing in transmission service. Or at least have a shop that has currently certified or at least had been in the last 10 years no more and not just a old school mechanic. What should be done is an Audio sound diagnostic service to locate exactly where the sound is coming from which will indicate the state of wear on the part making the noise. Short of pulling the transmission and disassembling it you don't just keep running it to you at least know more about the noise.
Next unless you lived or at least looked into a used transmission that offers a WARRANTY that would have also been a better advise to consider to the OP.
You are in Peru he is in Australia so unless you are man about countries not sure what either has to offer but should be looked into. Here in the USA and Canda there are several companies that offer low milage engine and transmission with a warranty.

Now in general I found some interesting information that I will leave for now and see how the OP responds. But its also clear that the original service being done in my world I never would have let one of my service guys get away with. I am not saying it was wrong just interesting some of the recommendations and conclusions and the big one not solving or finding the exact problems?. What's that all about?

Hi, I hope you're doing well. Your initial inquiry about the CX-9 raised important points about balancing repair costs with the vehicle’s remaining lifespan. At the time, the suggestion was to prioritize a precise diagnosis of the transmission noise and consider practical options, such as key repairs or exploring used transmissions with warranties. Additionally, a valid point raised by another comment was the importance of seeking a specialized transmission service or technician to pinpoint the exact source of the noise. This approach could have provided greater clarity on the extent of the issue.

It’s been over a year since you shared your situation, and I’m curious to know if you were able to resolve the issue or what option you ultimately decided on. Did you follow through with the repairs for the injectors and valve cover gaskets, seek a second opinion on the transmission, or decide to sell or scrap the car? Incorporating these insights, it would be interesting to hear how things turned out and if the steps you took aligned with your expectations. Looking forward to your update!

FYI....

It is always a wise idea to look at old threads and make a judgment about responding in them like this one. In this case the NEW member at the time has not returned to post on any thread nor apparently even logged in as a member since

Just saying ..... maybe find a more resent thread about the topics you are interested in or start your own thread if you have an actual issue that is like related?

I also see in my last I did not end the last response I made in this thread with ASE
