I couldn't get the car out of park. The engine starts. But shifter is locked.

I suspect the mechanism needs to be replaced.

Any ideas on part availability and ideas?

It really help to know at least the year, of your Mazda as well even the miles when asking for service-related questions.

Also when was the last service done and what was it?

These answers can help reduce a lot of guessing about things?

Services ate done with Uber regularity. All Services, oil, trans, tires, belts, tune up, etc.

 

Ok so go *on line and there is a direct service procedure to attempt to remedy that locked shifter.
It is DIYI friendly. But if that fails then you have other issues that need to be diagnosed from a service shop with experienced mechanics.
