Transmission replacement @ 700 miles
Thought I'd come back and update: got the car back today, 3 weeks later. Service manager said it's the sport mode (new in 2016) causing internal failure. Supposedly the problem has been corrected. He had a 3rd vehicle come in after mine and was expecting more.
Does that make sense? I thought sport mode only affected suspension, not anything in the drive train?
Sport mode has no affect on suspension settings in CX-5. It changes throttle mapping for more aggressive throttle actuation and causes transmission to hold gears longer for more spirited (less eco) driving. Read your owners' manual.
What doesn't make sense is the posts I've found online with what sounds like the same issue on earlier models. I hope this takes care of the problem, I do like the CX 5. ETA: Thanks paris1, for the explanation for honeybadger. So far, I've use sport mode on part of my route to work, up a short mountain road.

Been a while since I've logged in. I have about 4700 miles on the new transmission. No problems with it so far. Mazda offered to make a payment for me but I asked for a got a 7 year, 100,000 mile warranty on the powertrain instead.
