Hello,

Same issue with late 2017 MX5 Soul Red Crystal. 1 year, 20 000 km, and maybe 15 or 20 chips on the front. Since 6 months I take distance from vehicule but get chips anyway (i'm not driving alone in the road). Even on the side of the car ! Never seen that on a car (even for low costs cars).
My 30 000 kms, 2 years old BMW 5 serie has ONLY 1 chips, and I drive it without "restriction" because of the paint.
Biggest chip on the hood (and you can saw 2 more)

I've contact Mazda France, waiting for their response. The seller of the car (a guy worked at Mazda France) said it can be done under warrantly and it's a known issue**.
Searching a solution, but chipps repair seem to be only sell for North America

It's a beautiful car. We'll see how it goes.
After 2 months, doing fine. Love the color and the car.

Unhappy Soul Red Crystal Metallic paint - BEAUTIFUL but super chippy!

My first Mazda...chose a CX-5 and love love love it...zoom zoom! Initially, I received many compliments on the beautiful paint color. Too bad it's now chipped up beyond belief! Got it new...2017 bought in early 2018. Has 25k miles on it now, most of which are highway. I bought it from a dealer out of town, but take it to a local Mazda service shop. Do I take it back where I got it to see the chipped paint, or to my local dealership?

Curious as to what Mazda did for you after getting your paint shop quotes?

Thanks!

I have a 2019 CX-5 that's barely 2 months old and already has 5 paint chips down to the bare metal, 2 on the hood and 3 on the front passenger side quarter panel. I contacted Mazda corporate and they said since it's only 5 chips so far, they would send me a touch up pen for free and told me to continue to monitor the chipping over the next couple months. I'm hesitant to use the touch up pen because I've heard it isn't a very good match for the Soul Red Crystal Metallic, so it could make it look worse than the chip in the paint itself. We paid $600 more to get this color and I feel like Mazda should do more than just shrug their shoulders and offer a touch up pen for a car that's barely 2 months old because obviously there are issues with this paint. On the other hand, I feel that if I asked them to repaint the whole car for 5 chips does sound kind of ridiculous, unless it would be with a better quality paint or something. Does anyone have any suggestions?

So I have had my 2018 Soul red SUV for 2 years this month and really thinking of trading it. The paint is really bad at this point and if I get it painted it is still not going to last like a factory job. Has anyone contacted a lawyer about this yet? Looking for a new car already is NOT what I am looking forward to.

I feel your pain. We purchased a 2017 CX 5 GT and within weeks I was back at the dealer complaining about the chips in the finish. We don't even drive it on freeways. Anyway, the dealer gave me the old, "Yeah, that's too bad, but we can't do anything about it." They wouldn't even let me see a Mazda rep who regularly visits the dealerships. I waited 6 months for the touch up paint from Mazda and nothing. I finally went with Dr. Colorchip that does an pretty good job, but not perfect. I'd be willing to bet that in the last 2 1/2 years I've touched up 4 dozen chips. We also have a 2019 CX 9 in white. One chip in one year. The Crystal Red is pretty, but the paint stinks.

Snowflake white pearl is a nightmare with rock chips too. Just the thought if a pebble causes a chip. The Mazda touch up paint dries tan for that color too 🙄.

I am not very pleased with the quality of the paint job that Mazda has so rigorously touted. After a very short freeway trip, I noticed several tiny chips on the hood. Never heard any rocks, etc. hit the hood during this trip. The paint seems to be extremely thin. Also there are very fine swirl marks which appear to be beneath the clear coat. Curious if anyone else has had problems with this new paint option. Will be bringing it into the dealership for further evaluation.

My snow flake white pearl if 16 months old and i have 2 chips.. the only reason i have 2 chips is because i was driving next to a salt truck, then all the sudden , he turned on the salt spreader... aside from that no chips... and this is with (2) trip from PA to Fl back and forth as well as 17000 miles of city driving .. but when i have seen in person a RED cx-5.... my god it looked like someone was using the hood for BB-GUN practice...

Looks like we got lucky with our soul-red CX-5 or the Zurich Shield put on by the dealer is protecting the paint. More than 2 years of ownership and close to 20K miles and the paint is holding on very well.

All I did was speak with the Mazda service and they didn't argue with me.
