Default Engine malfunction,??

Good evening from South of California.
2017 Mazda CX5 60Kmiles..engine light came up yesterday..couldnt find any code with my OBD code reader..however I erased the code anyway and the check engine light was gone ...
Today same problem the cars computer said ENGINE malfunction...I erased the code (eventhough there was not code) and engine light is gone ..
Seems like the idling is fluctuating from 700 to 900....
Wife filled up the car with correct gas )) 3 days ago ...
Car runs just fine otherwise.
Is this common on this car?
Thank you
Phil

Welcome to the forum

plain and simple if the check engine light is on then there are codes or you ECU is failing .

but funny no codes but you…..erased the code… ? No you didn’t .
All you did was turn off the check engine light on your dash. The DTC is still active in the ECU file until the issues causing it is corrected. The check engine light will return unless it was caused from a anomalous condition which is no longer there.

Your RPM number stated are a sign of an issue.

Bottom line is you don’t know how you correctly use a Diagnostic Scanner.

There are 3 main areas you should have looked in the ECU not just for an active DTC.
