Default Check Engine light on, code reader shows no code??

Check Engine light came on, code reader displays "ERROR".
I hit the clear button but with no code showing it won't clear the Check Engine light.

Anyone have any ideas of what would trigger the light but not have a code?

Usually it's a fluke. Some scanners show '0000', some show 'Error'. My brother's Chevy gave something like a general Body Module code.

If it was me, I'd disconnect the battery for a good 30-45 minutes and see if any CEL comes back.

Borrowed a newer code reader that can read CAN system.
Checked and cleared the code tonight, 0455 EVAP Emission Control System Leak (Large)

Gas cap doesn't seem to set very snug after turning right and a few clicks, just a very slight touch and will move like it's not set in a snug closed position. I may need a new cap. I hope that's the problem.

UPDATE - Seems it was the cap.
Being careful to click it 5-6 times when replacing after refuel. No more codes. I have a new (CAN) code reader but haven't needed to use it.
