Default CX-5 Diesel engine failure

Labour to R&R that pipe would be a 2-4 hr job. Pipe is under $200, chuck in $100 for coolant.

Even @ Mazda you wouldn't pay close to $1000, let alone $1,500
@grim_reaper , I wonder if you can help me... I have just been contacted by our Mazda dealer who informed me that the engine has failed due to overheating, presumably caused by the failure of the pipe above. They have also said that Mazda Australia are not interested in helping out with it, because the car is 2012. Our situation is that we bought the car approx 6 months ago from the original owner who had the car serviced by Mazda main dealer for its entire life. We have since carried out one service with an independent. It sounds like the coolant pipe failure was the cause of the engine overheating. Do you have any recommendations about how to proceed with Mazda Aus, or how we can resolve the situaiton? Paying $16k for a new engine for a car that cost us $16k clearly doesn't make financial sense....

I don't see a way you would be able to get any warranty help from Mazda on an 11yr old car unless you have an extended warranty. No difference if the car was serviced by a dealer for most of its life, or not. That is the risk one takes by buying an older car. If it truly needs a new motor, I would check around at other indies or look for a used motor. Otherwise, it may be time to look for a new car.

You keep buying high and selling low and getting in worse situations.
1st... Take it to a local independent mechanic that specializes in engine expertise and let them diagnose just in case you have a scam dealer. Maybe the engine isnt toast. Did you continues driving the vehicle with overheating problems?

Next, If the engine is damaged, see if that local can install a used engine($3000 to $6000 for engine and $1000 to $2000 in labor) After it's fixed , run it til it dies. Dont lose more money by trade in.

In future, dont spend $16 k on a 11 year old vehicle with 170k miles just because
you or the wife like it.
I would have spent $7000 max on that used vehicle. Buy New, buy used with extend warranty or buy a very cheap beater
cars(10 year old cars for between $5000 and $9000)

To be fair, he is in Australia so it's about 67% of a US dollar as of today. 16k AU = 12k USD still too much though, but maybe used cars are a lot more expensive in Australia?

Nope. From australian website , Plenty of vehicles under 120,000km(74 k miles) for under $8000. Seems like overpaid.

Thanks for your input. Regarding buying high and selling low, I can assure you that is not the case in the Australian market (the buying high part). Cars are stupidly expensive here, it is an unavoidable fact. I challenge you to find any comparable 10-11 year old car in Australia for less than $16k. $7k buys you a complete wreck here. Probably not even roadworthy. 170k is km not miles by the way.

Regarding an independent mechanic, I have gone to one, but it was over his head, so it could be worth finding a diesel engine mechanic and see it they agree if the engine is actually shot.
