I keep a AAA map in all my vehicles.. and an old school compass.

Been there, done that. And have driven miles out of the way with my better half reading the map.
I wish there had been in car navigation when I was traveling on business and trying to find my way in a rental car at night with a 8X10 map from the rental car desk.

I use all my GPS systems like the electronic map that they are, and I mute them all (including my Garmin).
I have no need for anymore "voices in my head" especially ones that sound like a backseat driver...

I recall one episode of Top Gear where Clarkson was testing a BMW and got so irritated at the GPS female voice that sounded like it had a slight German accent and a bad attitude. He figured they hired a former female guard at one of the concentration camps to give orders over the GPS rather than "advising" you where to go.
