Callisto - clunk clunk sound from front end of vehicle when coming to a stop
i have a clunk clunk sound when applying the brakes and coming to a stop. Right before the vehicle comes to a stop I will get in rapid succession a clunk clunk sound. Will also do it when I take off from a stop sometimes. Any idea what it might be?
I thought maybe it was the passenger side engine mount because it had shot all of its oil out so I replaced it and the lower engine mount with OEM parts. Did not solve the clunk clunk problem though.
Is it the inner tripod joints in the axles? Or the splines on the inner axles?

Make sure the anti-roll bar end links and bushing are looked at.
Here is another data point I gathered this morning. I stopped around 30 times going to work.
Car in Drive, I get a clunk clunk just as I get to a complete stop.
Car in Neutral, perfectly silent as I come to a complete stop.
it seems to me like the car is using engine braking when the brakes are applied and I am slowing down, and just before a complete stop the axles unload themselves and go clunk clunk.
Not sure if it is the CV joints, the tripod joints, or the splines on the axles that go into the transmission, or something wrong with differential gears.
Further data, 2015 CX-5 with 150k miles on it.

Just as another thing to check off the list, look at the mounts for everything else underneath since you already addressed the engine mounts. I know it probably isn't your problem, but I know things like loose heat shields and exhaust pipe hooks/mounts can cause a noise like you're describing.
Sounds like the 1966 Dodge panel van I had just before the rear end gave up the ghost and two shocks as well.
