Default Is this the beginning of the end for my 2014 CX-5?

Initially had a fault code relating to the vacuum pump and so I had the pump replaced with a new one.

Then later I had the oil pressure light coming on and off, followed by the dealership detecting the P06de fault code.

The general consensus from their team and an independent mechanic was that the car was doomed and I was given several quotes, all in the thousands, for cleaning and repair work. I will note that none of the mechanics went to the extent of visually inspecting the engine. Diagnostics were derived from the fault code and my explanation of the issue with the oil pressure lights.

Since then, I have replaced the oil and flushed the engine, and have driven 300+ miles since with no lights on and the car seems to run perfectly.

Does anybody care to guess what might be going on underneath the bonnet? What are the odds that it may actually be okay and I can hope to keep running it for the foreseeable?

It's a higher trim model, at 152K miles, so I am not sure if the car is worth anything currently. (I would disclose the whole history of these problems to any potential buyer).

I really love this car and am not looking forward to having to replace it with how the car market currently is. What would you do?

Exactly what engine is in it? As you were told in your other thread, the diesel with that fault code may indicate a fatal condition - or not. If it were me and I loved the CX I’d do what you did and watch things closely. Without knowing your personal situation it’s tough to make a firm recommendation.

It is the 2.2 D Sport and in terms of my situation- well that is why I'm back here looking for advice. I have just bought my first home so it's a tricky time financially, especially given car prices right now.

I was hoping to hear reassurance from somebody who has had a similar experience and then their car has carried on for 10,000's more miles without seeing the light again! I'm just shocked that it's been running so well ever since I changed the oil.

This is exactly what is happening to mine right now. Did you solve this issue?
Also wondering if I need to look for a new car or if this can be fixed. Mazda quoted me “prices start from $8000” which I can’t justify.

Although I've never done it with my cars, with my boats (which have big diesel engines) I've had good experiences using engine oil analysis. It's rather like a blood test for your car. In doing this, it's best to have a baseline or track record of oil samples over a long period so you can be alert for changes, but even a single engine oil analysis can highlight problems such as coolant or high levels of other contaminants in the oil. That may help you decide whether or not to keep the car.

Here's what ChatGPT artificial intelligence says about engine oil analysis for automobiles:

Engine oil analysis can be a valuable tool for assessing the health of a car's engine. On the positive side, it provides early detection of potential issues by analyzing the composition of the oil, identifying contaminants, and gauging wear particles. This proactive approach allows for timely maintenance, preventing major problems and extending the engine's lifespan. Additionally, oil analysis can help optimize oil change intervals, saving on maintenance costs and reducing environmental impact. However, there are some drawbacks to consider. The upfront cost and time associated with obtaining and analyzing oil samples may deter some car owners. Furthermore, interpretation of results requires expertise, and false positives or negatives can occur. Additionally, certain engine problems may not manifest in the oil immediately, limiting the scope of this method. Overall, while engine oil analysis offers a proactive approach to engine health, it should be complemented by other diagnostic methods for a comprehensive assessment.

If you decide to use engine oil analysis, be scrupulously careful not to get dirt or other contaminants from your car in the sample when drawing the oil from your car. Meticulous is the word!

I've had good experience over the years using Blackstone Labs, which charges $35 for a single analysis and offers quick turn-arounds.

Good luck,

The SH engines are unreliable. I would be looking to get rid of it before it finally fails.
