2024 CX5 paint chipping
Water-based vehicle paints were rolled out in the late 1990's and European countries adopted them early on.
Nearly every manufacturer has been using water-based paint since the 2000's.
I would point out that automotive water-based paint still has 10% or so solvent materials in it and is used for the base coat.
The primers, sealers and clear coats still remain solvent based.
For me, the real issue with the CX-5 is windscreen chips, I have very minimal paint dings.
Mine had a new windshield replaced the year I bought it, and I've had 4 chip repairs since.
One just last week but they use a great deal of sand (which is really gravel and some actual rocks in most cases) on the roads here in the winter along with various types of ice meting chemicals.

I can say from my point of view that the hood chipping is an issue on my girlfriend's white 2021 CX-5. We've driven her car all over the east coast, making many trips to all the states between Florida and Maine. The amount of chips on her hood were mind boggling to me after like 55k miles. When I was visiting her in December I cleaned all the rusty chips and filled them with touch-up paint. When it comes to my 2021 Carbon Edition Turbo CX-5, I only noticed a few chips on the hood after almost 45k miles. I do drive more in town though, which means I'm not getting as exposed on the highway in my car.
The only paint chipping I've ever noticed on my newer vehicles is on the plastic front bumper parts.
My wife's 2016 Buick Encore is the same way, and the paint is peeling off her plastic rear spoiler.
It takes a special paint mixture to adhere to any plastic and most plastics today are not consistently made of the exact same materials which further complicates the issue.
A plastic bumper replacement cover you purchase today may not even have a single base component of the one that was originally on it.
Plastic molecules do not make for great paint adherence, and they also expand and contract far more than metal does.
Many of those used in vehicles are constantly "outgassing" (some say off-gassing) which impacts the paint.

Most "all " chips on the hood are from all the small debris that you don't see when you are on roads and highways traveling at 55-80mph tossed up by vehicles in front of you.
Here is an example or the larger sized pebbles from a vehicle in front and not even in the same lane.

Nothing makes me squirm more than hearing something ping off the hood lmao.
just washed my car yesterday when it warmed up...had the car for a little over a year now and the white front bumper looks polka dotted black with chips from all the sand/road debris from highway driving...have a few in the metal panels as well but they are also not taking direct/forceful hits as much as the front bumper due to the angle of impact...the paint on the plastic doesn't seem to hold up great, at least not in comparison to my previous vehicle...bunch of stars in the windshield as well...guess i drive too fast lol

I know exactly what you're describing. My girlfriend's hood on her white CX-5 had lots of tiny chips too all over the front and even the side pillars. I cleaned them all up and added OEM touch up paint. The paint settled in pretty good and you really can't tell there were chips unless you're a few inches away from it while looking. Just don't let them start to rust!!!
