2016 CX-5 Burning oil
#22
My dear friend at Mazda Customer Service, perhaps you can explain why there are so few complaints if burning oil is so normal for the CX-5. I can tell you that I have spoken to other mechanics who say such consumption on an engine with 20,000 km is well outside the range of normal. You consider yourself an expert yet your language would say otherwise. Believe me, if Mazda had told me my engine was going to burn a litre of oil every 5000 km from the day I took it off their lot I would have taken my business elsewhere.
While I happen to be a consulting engineer and happen to have worked for three different vehicle manufacturers, Mazda is not one of them.
Try this, pretend you own a different make, call your local dealership and tell them your car burned a similar amount of oil as yours and see what they say. I'll bet dollars to donuts they tell you it is normal. Time to get over your attitude.

Yes I have an attitude. I am still paying for a brand new vehicle that's burning a litre of oil every 5000 km when I probably should have kept my 2007 Honda Civic that was problem free. How much oil consumption can I expect to see when I reach 100,000 km? Maybe with your credentials you can answer my previous questions. You haven't so far. You've been quick to criticize me though.

Not sure what "previous questions" you're referring to; your engine is normal. As for what to expect by the 100,000 km mark, I wouldn't expect the consumption to change at all, in fact, I wouldn't expect the consumption to change until way-way beyond the 200,000 km mark, errr, unless your engine develops an oil leak.

Steve_G: In the spirit of being helpful, let me ask you a couple of questions about the engine break-in and service history of your vehicle. First, did you follow the recommended procedure Mazda outlines in the owners' manual for proper engine break in and the length of time for such procedure? If not, how did you vary from it?
Second, Do you check the oil level yourself, following the procedure Mazda recommends? How many oil changes has the vehicle had? Are you aware that these engines never read "full" on the dipstick after an oil change? Rather, they read about 1/3 to 1/2 down the stick between the hi/lo marks. Are you taking that discrepancy into account when you state that it's burning a litre of oil every 3k miles?

Why don't you try a different brand of oil if you're sure it's using? Mazda moly, the factory fill, never gave me good oil mileage. Tried it twice between other brands of oil I used. However, when
I used Pennzoil or Mobile 1 the oil usage stopped.

I was thinking of doing that however due to this problem, I've been consistently having my oil changed at the dealership so the problem can be documented for "warranty" purposes. The warranty appears to be worthless. I'm seriously going to consider your suggestion though. I would love to know if my problem is unique or if it's commonplace with this engine. (2.5 litre) I'll never get an honest answer from Mazda. Thank you.

I just bout my used 2014 cx5 2l and noticed it was low on oil at bottom mark. I added a quart and now one and a half gas tanks later maybe 400 or so miles it's back to the low mark so I had to add another quart. The exhaust tips are black covered.i think the dealer probably knew and sold me a lemon.
